Starting point for this project was a business idea for an internal app designed to simplify employees’ day-to-day administrative tasks while integrating new technologies such as augmented reality.

Research

Due to an early project restructuring, I combined the interviews with testing of the paper prototypes and recorded screen flows. Based on the known internal roles, a persona was developed and then slightly refined after the first iteration of user testing.

Transition into the concept and ideation phase

In an initial workshop, I worked with a team colleague to create a user story map, which was expanded based on emerging questions. Ideas related to existing business concepts were already present within the project team. I incorporated these ideas into the story map and further developed them at screen level during a design studio workshop. This process resulted in a comprehensive overview of the entire screen flow.

Prototyping & Usability Testing

Using the screen flows, I was able to clarify technical feasibility at an early stage and gather initial feedback. The augmented reality component was first designed on paper and subsequently tested with initial participants using the Wizard-of-Oz method.

After that, the focus was on making the mobile component more tangible through interactions. I transferred the screen flows into high-fidelity prototypes in Adobe XD, primarily without a style guide, as none existed at the time. Only the marketing color palette was defined.

Visual design & building the styleguides

The visual design for this project was handled by a visual designer, whom I supported throughout the creation of the style guide and the screens.

Learnings

The testing phase provided the insights I would normally have expected to gain earlier through interviews. As a result, technical integrations and clarifications for modified features that would offer real user value could only be incorporated at a relatively late stage. In future projects, I would not forgo interviews or contextual observations, even when working within a changed project structure.
